I nearly passed on reading Father Fiction; I knew it by the former title but honestly the new title made me even less likely to read it...reason being, I grew up with a father. I only read it because I like Donald Miller. What I wasn't expecting was a lot of wisdom about life in general. And the book gets better as it goes along. Several chapters have little to do with the angst over growing up without a dad. I don't know how this book should've been marketed, but a lot of people probably won't read it who, like myself, grew up in a conventional household. And by the way, having a dad hardly means life is great. I had one and I am one, and there's baggage aplenty. "We all carry a father wound." We're all pretty disfunctional regardless of how we grew up. Eventually we realize that we're accountable for our choices and the parenting we received may be an influence but does not fate us to success or failure.

The chapters on dating, sex, and vocation should be read by everyone. This is Miller at his best. I especially liked his description of going on photo shoots with his nature photographer (and editor) friend John. He has perfected a refreshing style of writing that sounds like you're sitting with him at a coffee house. Don shares his Christian convictions without sounding preachy. Get beyond the title and enjoy.

"Hamlet" is for everybody, but not for everybody to enjoy equally. The sad truth is I am one of those who have come, through some application, to feel real appreciation for the play, yet never loved it. The fault is mine and not Shakespeare's, but it is an honest fault worth exploring.

The story is pretty straightforward on its face. The king of Denmark has died, and as his son Hamlet fights overwhelming grief, he comes to discover the father died at the hand of his successor, Hamlet's uncle Claudius. As he contemplates the enormity of this knowledge, he wrestles with the fact his friends and court advisors are in league with the uncle. Even Hamlet's mother has compromised her connection with him by marrying Claudius soon after being widowed. Through all this turmoil a cosmic consciousness slowly emerges in young Hamlet.

"There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio/Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

It's that cosmic consciousness that's at the heart of why "Hamlet" sticks out so. At the same time, it's a revenge play, and in the end one of Shakespeare's bloodiest this side of "Titus Andronicus". "Hamlet's" murky origins are explored in an essay, "A Note On The Sources", included in the Signet edition. This discusses evidence for an earlier text of the play, before the version we have, possibly written by Thomas Kyd who penned a popular bloodbath called "The Spanish Tragedy".

Our "Hamlet" has at times a two-headed aspect; if it were a movie, it might have been co-directed by Quentin Tarantino and Ingmar Bergman. A lot of soul-searching dominates the first three acts; monologues abound, some more gripping than others. The story is kicked off very dramatically by a pair of soldiers who have spotted the ghost of Hamlet's father, but slows up to accommodate one of Shakespeare's overdone devices, the play-within-the-play. Hamlet's madness is a topic of much discussion, but is he even acting mad? It's hard to tell from the text, which has our hero going off in several directions at once. His love for the waifish Ophelia is said to be a great motivator, but all we see him do with her is blow her off.

"This is the story of a man who could not make up his mind." The 1948 film by Laurence Olivier began with that statement, but this question of Hamlet's indecision, like the madness thing, is unsatisfying reductivist. Olivier's film is terrific, in part for some judicious trims that do away with the subplot about a Norwegian invasion and focus more attention on Hamlet himself. One wonders if Shakespeare's longest play is a little too, well, long.

Who is Hamlet? I don't think Shakespeare tries to answer that. What he did was build something so enigmatic that civilization stepped in to fill and refill the blanks.

What we have from Shakespeare is an underbaked or rebaked story, many of the best lines of dialogue in English, a few puns that haven't aged as well, and achingly deep thoughts about the nature of man; alternately nihilist, existentialist, and Christian in tone - sometimes all three at once. Is man just "food for worms" in the end, or is there indeed "a divinity that shapes our ends/Rough-hew them how we will"? Shakespeare was too great an artist to attempt a definitive answer, and that's the glory of "Hamlet". But there's frustration also in the open-ended nature of its characters and narrative. Sometimes you're better off not trying to cram too much into a simple revenge story.

A Cautionary Presage: The notes I write below may disappoint, displease, sadden, and upset readers who affirm a non-confessional Christian view and possibly hurt some readers' feelings. Below is potentially alarming strident apologetic truth. If you dislike conservative religious viewpoints and Christian apologetics, you may want to cease from reading. The following is based on my personal research as a conservative Christian theist who disallows Miller's epistemic pre-commitments.

I personally am reluctant to avow the author's critical pre-theoretical grid and underlying axioms applied to his textual scrutiny and historical analysis. As a confessing Christian I prefer the fallible works of Jenkins, R. Brown, Bock, Noll, Schaff, Hart, etc.

So, if you enjoy a lengthy book on history;
If you aim to grow in your critical analysis of Christianity;
If you desire to become conversant at a cocktail party pertaining to Christian history using a non-strict approach in touching orthodoxy;
If you take pleasure in Newsweek Magazine's editorially stance and other media outlets that abhor conservative religious views;

And if your cultural and religious presuppositions concur with Jon Meacham (editor Newsweek) who boldly declared: "I am also a critic of Christianity, if by critic one means an observer who brings historical and literary judgment to bear on the texts and traditions of the church." If you answered yes to three or more aforementioned questions, then "CHRISTIANITY: The First Three Thousand Years" by Diarmaid MacCulloch (professor of the history of the church, Oxford) is a good fit for your rational, spiritual, and social pre-commitments. Additionally anti-conservative Meacham, with profound satisfaction, divulges: "I sense a kind of kinship with Diarmaid MacCulloch," whereas MacCulloch confesses that "I live with the puzzle of wondering how something so apparently crazy can be so captivating to millions of other members of my species." Meachum in absolute conformity adds: "That puzzle confronts anyone who approaches Christianity with a measure of detachment."

Stephen Prothero rightly notes (concerning judges) that when it comes to scholars and their biases, there are "only two types: those who acknowledge their biases and therefore try not to succumb to them, and those who are ignorant of their biases and therefore succumb to them unwittingly" (USA Today, 5-17-10).
Unbeknownst to these two religious non-conservatives is the actuality that their own controlling presuppositions are not truly detached but empowered by a priori biases and engrained assumptions including:

- The biblical text is not inspired scripture revealed in history by a sovereign God who has aseity and as such furnishes unfolding Redemptive Holy Writ while utilizing flawed men to make His word known; they presuppose that a perfect God cannot use imperfect men to communicate His perfect will as He expresses His authority over history.
- An overly critical method concerning religious claims. They affirm this critical scheme as a virtue while putting critical tools aside while they are leaning on a worldview that lacks the ontic foundation that furnishes the necessary a priori conditions for the laws of reason required to analyze textual and historical issues.
- A moderate version of relativism that leads to irrationality and lacks the epistemic credentials to account for the comprehension and promulgation of their own anti-logical rational paradigm.
- A rejection of the universality of humankind's sin, the sinfulness of sin, and the necessary and sufficient solution to sin exclusively found in the atonement through the cross of Jesus Christ as He alone provides complete expiation and imputation.

This work has an alluring writing style encased in a relaxed progressive bias; it's hefty and always remarkable; nonetheless the author may want to be more attentive to the epistemic difficulties and irrationality that his moderate skeptical approach is built upon. His presuppositions do not provide an immutable ground necessary to account for the immutability of the laws of logic (LNC/LI), whereas these invariant laws are necessarily utilized in all external criticism of history or texts. Internal criticism of the author's worldview should precede any external skepticism his autonomous thought deploys forasmuch as his lack of an immutable foundation destroys the epistemic possibility of proving or disproving anything, including his view of history.

"Become a Better You" is a book written by Joel Osteen. Joel is the pastor of the largest church in America. His church is in Houston, Texas. Lakewood Church has approximately forty-five thousand adults present week. He also has his weekly television and books on best-selling books of the New York Times.

This book provides instructions on how to enjoy the joys and blessings that God intended for us all. His words are simple to understand andgive you perception to various passages in the Bible as he references them while giving an explanation of their meaning. My own book has highlighted key words and phrases that were eye-openers to me.

Right from the beginning I found his words brought great inspiration to me. I felt uplifted as I turned each page and read of various circumstances and events within his life or others he wrote of. I felt the healing presence of God as my eyes were fascinated by the messages that were clearly defined.

I have learned first of all that you must forgive yourself and others for past mistakes. We must not harbor any grudge against those that have offended us. Instead we must pray for their salvation and in doing so we are released from the hurt that we felt. Revenge is not the answer to settle a dispute. The answer is to forgive and forget and try to resolve the issue to the best of your ability. God will see your efforts and you will feel so much better about yourself. After this is done, a new beginning is established and the new foundation will bear much fruit.

We must live with joy in our hearts and wear a smile on our face. A smile is contagious and might help someone that you see and change their whole outlook for that day. There will always be situations that we encounter that will allow our faith to grow, but this is necessary to strengthen our faith. We must live in anticipation of our issues in life being solved. We are to act as if God is already making arrangements to allow this dream of ours to materialize. We must realize it is his timetable, not ours that matters.

We must live to encourage others when we feel they are in need. Do build someone up that is trying to establish a new project or creative endeavor. You will help their self esteem and this will allow them to proceed with confidence. This must be done with your whole heart, not expecting something in return. This is a seed you are sowing. The more seeds you sow, the better your harvest in life will be.

Try not to dwell on your sicknesses in life. Instead awake and write down that you will be healed in the name of Jesus. If you focus on anticipating healing power, your mind will begin to change how you feel, and the power of God will heal whatever you may have. Mind power is vital in achieving all that we are able to within our lives.

Become an optimist as we must think positively in all aspects of our lives. Positive thoughts and energy will bring you positive results. This is not always easy to do. In order to achieve the positive result you might have to look at a situation at a different angle. It is important to remember if God closes one door in your life, he is going to open another that will have better things for you. You must learn to trust in his guidance.

This book was enlightenment in my life's journey. I found that the messages within were vital for me to improve the quality of my life. This is a spiritual passage that can only bring benefits to anyone that chooses to read it.

5. Follow through is not optional; it's integral. Our follow-up needs to be fast but it has to be friendly and not look like some mass mailing. But it also needs to contain a gift which lets them know that we truly appreciated their being our guests.

6. When our guests return for a second look, we have won 80% of the battle because we have increased our chances that they will begin a journey with Christ. It is during this second visit that we encourage them to take the next steps and we follow-up with them again through either e-mail or snail mail.

7. A major key is to create sticky situations because if we do not connect our second time guests to others in our church, within four to six months they will be gone. Our job is to guide them in the right direction to form relationships that 10. We want to offer people service opportunities because this gives people an opportunity to connect with others as well as helping them take ownership of the church. And, as they take ownership of the church that moves them closer to church membership.
