There are some Christian groups, institutions, churches, came to some very important and sensitive aspect of life just because they are or are not written in Scripture, or is it a big mistake to turn over what the Bible says it is. The story of Onan in Genesis 38:3-10, what to keep, to deny as a benchmark for any form of birth control. But what is? That is to say just that?
The story of Onan, son of Judah occurs in Genesis 38:3-10: "So[Shua, Judah] wife was pregnant and gave birth to a son, and [Judah] gave his name. She conceived again and bore a son, and gave him the name Onan .... Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the eyes of the Lord and the Lord killed him. And Judah said to Onan, "Go to thy brother's wife and marry her, and raise an heir to your brother." But Onan knew that the heir should not be, and it happened when he wenthis wife to his brother that issued the fact so that it should provide an heir for his brother. And what did displeased the Lord, and he slew him also. "
God killed Onan because the man scornfully refused to meet his family under the responsibility Alliance. This particular procedure is called levirate, in which a dead man is closer to unmarried men (usually a younger brother, as in this case) married the widow, to produce an heirDead. This duty is spelled Deuteronomy 25:5-10 for the tribal inheritance (v. 6). Another fortunate circumstance levirate is recorded in the Book of Ruth, an event that ultimately produced the greatest king of Israel, David (Ruth 4:17).
Of course, this former national law is not applicable today.
Some lessons to prohibit the use of the Onan story about the use of birth control. However, that argument specious, based on old and incorrect ideathat sexual relations between husband and wife for the sole purpose of producing children. The wrath of God against Onan had everything to do with his inability to fulfill its duty of allegiance and anything to do with his method of birth control. Scripture does not directly consider the use of birth control, and then it is a matter of personal preference, that God has revealed as the true Christian life. We can by the principles of personal responsibility is driven managementown resources to provide children (I Timothy 5:8) and love for his companion (Eph 5.22 to 33).
